Barcelona, intercultural domestic spaces.

“WITH YOU OVER THE DISTANCE AND WITH YOU IN PROXIMITY”: People who look after people and connected families. Domestic service work is today, as it was in the past, a form of incorporation into a city. For many Barcelona families, it constitutes an opportunity to ease some of the housework within the context of a difficult reconciliation between working and family life, especially for women. A woman who looks after the home and the parents or children of a family member in many cases has had to leave her own family at home, leaving them in the care of other family members.

In what is often an unequal exchange, because of the precariousness in which domestic workers usually find themselves, globalisation paradoxically introduces itself in intimacy. Cultural contact circulates in daily life within the kitchens and dining rooms of the people who look after families and homes and the Barcelona families who employ them. At the same time, thousands of kilometres away, Barcelona, and with it Catalonia and Europe, they circulate through the houses and cities of those who have come here to work.
